Anaesthetic-induced preconditioning of the heart has now become a well accepted phenomenon, where the delivery of a volatile anaesthetic induces a longer lasting cardioprotective effect. Volatile anaesthetics can reduce necrotic/apoptotic myocardial cell death through activation of multiple molecular pathways. We are just at the beginning of understanding the precise mechanisms which mediate preconditioning by volatile anaesthetics. The present material provides an overview of our current knowledge of the mechanisms of cardioprotection by volatile anaesthetics.

Volatile anaesthetic myocardial protection: a review of the current literature
Ischaemic preconditioning is a powerful innate adaptive phenomenon whereby brief periods of sublethal ischaemia result in marked tolerance to subsequent lethal ischaemia. Halogenated anaesthetics have been shown to mimic ischaemic preconditioning, modifying and attenuating ischaemia reperfusion injury. This review aims to present the current animal and human data, discuss the possible mechanism...
متن کاملInvestigating the role of acute and repeated stress on remote ischemic preconditioning-induced cardioprotection
Objective(s): To study the effect of acute and repeated stress on cardioprotection-induced by remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC).Materials and Methods: RIPC was induced by giving 4 short cycles of ischemia and reperfusion, each consisting of five min. The Langendorff’s apparatus was used to perfuse the isolated rat hearts by subjecti...
متن کاملExploring the role and inter-relationship among nitric oxide, opioids, and KATP channels in the signaling pathway underlying remote ischemic preconditioning induced cardioprotection in rats
Objective(s): This study explored the inter-relationship among nitric oxide, opioids, and KATP channels in the signaling pathway underlying remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) conferred cardioprotection. Materials and Methods: Blood pressure cuff was placed around the hind limb of the animal and RIPC was performed by 4 cycles of infla...
متن کاملVolatile anaesthetic effects on calcium conductance of planar lipid bilayers formed with synthetic lipids or extracted lipids from sarcoplasmic reticulum.
Volatile anaesthetics are known to increase leakage of calcium from the light fraction of skeletal sarcoplasmic reticulum (L-SR) which has no calcium release channels. To explore the role of the lipid environment, we have examined the effect of volatile anaesthetics on calcium conductance (gCa) of lipid membranes. Planar lipid bilayers were formed with a mixture of synthetic phospholipids and c...
متن کاملActivation of K2P channel–TREK1 mediates the neuroprotection induced by sevoflurane preconditioning
BACKGROUND Preconditioning with volatile anaesthetic agents induces tolerance to focal cerebral ischaemia, although the underlying mechanisms have not been clearly defined. The present study analyses whether TREK-1, a two-pore domain K(+) channel and target for volatile anaesthetics, plays a role in mediating neuroprotection by sevoflurane. METHODS Differentiated SH-SY5Y cells were preconditi...
